Finding 'The Little Buddha'

Ossian MacLise

The towns along the way didn't have much to offer as they were now only shadows of their former colonial days. Money and possessions were scarce amongst the people but they had an intensity to live, love life and show kindness to us. I grew within myself and my perception of life broadened as I witnessed their world of more while having less, what they had was more valuable than money and possessions. I saw the world differently and it would stay with me forever and somewhere deep down, it changed who I was.

We crossed the river and made our way to the Nepalese border post on the opposite bank of the river. To our disappointment no one was at the post and we needed a stamp on our passports to show we had come in legally. Terry and Cockney Dave split up and walked around the back calling out for assistance. No one came forward, so I decided in true Aussie fashion, they can get stuffed and we will forget the stamp and talk our way around it at the other end.

Walking along the dirt road, we were lucky to see a taxi cab. Everyone was waving frantically and he stopped scooping us up taking us to another run down dusty border town called Kakarbhitte, which had now returned to the kingdom of Nepal through a quirk in history. If Las Vegas is a showgirl then this town is a dying beggar. The best thing about arriving would be the next morning when we were leaving.

We were finally in Nepal, a little worn out and tired, all agreeing a hot shower and warm bed would be welcome. Isn't it funny how everything in life at this moment, came down to food, shelter and rest. I know by tomorrow morning though, we will be ready with renewed enthusiasm for another day.

Each day was an adventure, moving closer to a silent enlightenment, none of us consciously aware of our new found understanding of places and people we visited. None of us had any real complaints travelling in India except for the occasional bed bug and a few ants in our rice but each day held such promise and freedom. What I loved most was if we were a day late or a day early it didn't really matter, now that was cool. Traveling without a timetable was complete freedom to explore and be whoever I wanted to be and I thank the universe again and again for this adventure.

I became philosophical and believed wherever the road led, it would take us, whoever we met, whatever situation we encountered, we would always be safe. As a group of young hippies, we felt more than just alive because we knew we had real freedom. Isn't this the feeling everyone really yearns for in life?

Friends like Terry, Anne and Cockney Dave became my family as we travelled on the great hippie flower-power trail from here to there and beyond. I
